PROLOGUE

How different is good from evil? And can you tell the difference anymore?
Questions I have asked myself ever since the battle… the final battle.

When we were young, the three of us, girls, sisters, friends. We wanted to be ephemeral, we wanted to live in the moment, to cling to that moment of happiness, no demons, the beauty, a rush of blood, the happiness…

We wanted to cherish every last moment, who knew? What if tomorrow never comes? But, of course, it does. So long as the demons live and we’re still standing, tomorrow will always come.

I try to put the past away, too many bad memories, try to lock it away, put it on ice, or in one of those little chests, with the little locks, the ones Grams bought us when we were young. Prue was almost six, I was three and Phoebe, too young to remember.

My name is Piper Halliwell, Mrs that is; well you can add the Wyatt, if you please. We Halliwell witches are not one to take our husbands names, not a feminist issue, it just didn’t occur to us. I will not lie to you; this story does not have a happy ending, not like the fairytales you read to the little ones. So, where do I begin? The day we became charmed, or the day we lost a sister, maybe the day the line between the present and the future disintegrated…
…and the present began to collide with the future.

Today’s date, let me see, a week after the battle, the fifteenth I presume, of June that is, June 2026. I wonder what will happen, I know that many years from now I will be old, sitting on this very chair, telling my grandchildren what I am about to tell you. The only difference, my children will be fighting the battles, along with my sisters’ children

I must warn you though, my life is no simple journey, we sisters have been through is all, you will see happiness, but buried deep down, you will find more than you bargained for…

Now that I have prepared you I have still the job of telling you about the people in my life, a journey that even confuses me at times. The parents, the children, and now, even the grandchildren…

I will start from the beginning, when Penelope Johnson became Penelope Halliwell, and brought the world one step closer to meeting the Charmed Ones. The birth is not important; it’s the rebirth that leads to the final battle.
